The Gantt is the programme of works. Every task on the job is laid out across a calendar, so you can see the whole sequence at a glance.

Each bar is one task, with a start date, a finish date, and a length. Reading the bars left to right is reading the job in the order it will actually happen.

Dependencies are the point

The bars that matter most are the ones joined by a line. That line is a dependency — plastering cannot start until the first-fix is signed off, and the floor cannot go down until plastering is dry.

Because the links are real, rescheduling one bar shows you immediately what else has to move. That is the whole reason to keep the Gantt honest, instead of a date scribbled on a whiteboard.
